Introduction to Ayurveda


             After an indifference of ages, unprecedented work of Indian rishis in Medical system has gotten admiration of the world. Buzzword like Yoga and Pranayama has reached every doorstep through persistent efforts of Indian Yoga Gurus which eventually made us brainstorm about Ayurveda. Ayurveda etymologically means ‘the science of Life’. “Ayur” stands for life and “Veda” stands for science or study. Also, it is often translated as Knowledge of Life or Knowledge of longevity. Ayurveda Is not merely about herbs and remedies but it has a much wider spectrum.  The word” Ayur” in Ayurveda defines as the contact of our body with a soul. The amount of time determines the span of life. Health is defined as the natural state of three aspects Body, Soul and Mind. When such natural state contacts with unhappiness are defined as Disease. Ayurveda comprehensively maintains Physical, Mental and The spiritual health of a person. Moreover, showing the prevention and treatment of disease when it occurs.

Foundation of Ayurveda

          Our body composed of five elements called “Panch mahabhutas” viz Jala (Water), Prithvi (Earth), Vayu(Air), Agni(fire), Akasa (Sky). It is believed that Whole universe is also composed o these five elements and it assists for the nutrition of our body. These five elements give rise to doshas called "Vayu", "Pitta" and "Kapha". Combination of Earth and water give Kapha Dosha, Earth and ire give Pitta Dosha and Vayu and Akasa result in Vayu Dosha. Abnormality in any of these three Doshas gives rise to various diseases. Balance o Tridoshas keep the Body as well as Mind healthy. Ayurveda has distinguished Diseases in two categories Manasik (Mental) and Sharirika (Body). Ayurveda states that every The disease consists of imbalance one of the three Doshas or combination of Two or Three Doshas.

  

History of Ayurveda  

            All the historical references can be found in Atharva-Veda one of the four Vedas known as Sama, Rig, Yajur and Atharva. We would not only get the description of Drugs but also the cases of Disease in a vivid manner. As per the Historical references, it is being said that Lord Brahma who is the creator of the Universe supposed to have explained Ayurveda to Prajapati Daksha in the form o Slokas.  from Daksha, it had been transferred to two Ashwinikumaras who learned this art and science of living. From them, it was conveyed to Lord Indra who graduated in this medical system. References mentioned that when Earth was grappling with various diseases; Sages gathered at the Himalayas and promoted Bharadwaja to learn Ayurveda from Lord Indra. On his return, Bharadwaja taught to Atreya who had 6 followers namely Agnivesha, Bhela, Parasara, Jatukarna, Ksharpani and Harita. Each of these followers wrote a separate text on Ayurveda but some of the text got disappeared in subsequent years. Fortunately, two  texts got preserved called “Agnivesha Samhita” and “Bhela Samhita”.Presently these texts are being widely used.
